The Amazon price line: the number no vendor is given

Last updated: 30 September 2026

For most listings Amazon holds a price it treats as competitive, and compares your Buy Box price with it. It appears in no Vendor Central report. When your price sits above that line, the Buy Box can be suppressed. This chapter shows the line, where your price sits against it, and what it has cost you.

Amazon does not set your shelf price alone. For each listing it keeps a price it treats as competitive, derived from what large retailers charge for the same product outside Amazon. We call it the price line.

The line matters because Amazon compares it with your Buy Box price. When your price sits above it, Amazon can stop showing the Buy Box: the listing stays, the add-to-basket button goes. That is the most common reason a Buy Box disappears without any competitor doing anything.

Why you have never seen this number

Amazon does not publish it. It is in no Vendor Central report, in no seller report, and in no export you can request. Teams usually discover it backwards, by noticing that a Buy Box goes away at a certain price and comes back below it. The line explains that behaviour directly, and it moves: Amazon changes it on its own, without telling anyone.

What we show, and how

The value is recorded at each collection of the product, from the one that feeds the rest of the dashboard, at no extra cost. Between two readings it is held flat and never interpolated, so a flat stretch means we did not read, not that Amazon did not move.

The chart draws your Buy Box price against the line and marks in amber every period spent above it. The tiles give the line at the last reading, your price and the gap, the share of the window spent above, and the hours of Buy Box lost for price reasons over the same window.

What we do not claim

We show a value and a date. We never say that Amazon copied a named retailer, and we never name one here: which retailers Amazon follows is not published, and we do not guess it. Time above the line is a risk, not a verdict, and Amazon may leave the Buy Box in place. Not every listing has a line; when there is none, the chapter says so rather than showing an empty chart.
